1863 1/2r-2r Black Garcia essays, complete sheet of 110, an amazingly well preserved sheet in a deep shade of black that is strongly bronzed, the setting was laid out so that all three values are in the sheet, the top three horizontal rows are 1/2r, the next five are 1r and the final three rows are 2r, position 100 of the sheet is inverted in the black sheet making tete-beche pairs vertically or horizontally possible, this sheet is unusually choice with large selvage all around, folded along each side but margins are still well clear all around, without gum as issued, very fine and choice; at the petition of the government a contract for producing the first postage stamps was awarded to Justiniano Garcia in March of 1863, this contract was rescinded in April of that same year after stamps had been printed, however they remained unissued and none were placed in use; the black is rare in full sheets and especially so in this select quality; Scott values each impression at $75.00 or $8,250.00 for singles.
