                        Charles I, group I, Halfcrown, 13.41g., Tower, type 1a3, lightweight issue, king in armour on horseback left, plumes on horse´s head and rump, no rose on housing, no groundline below, rev. heavily garnished square shield, m.m. cross calvary (JGB 283 (same obv. die – a coin of full weight); N.2202; S.2766) a splendid example of this short-lived light weight issue, pleasantly toned, and well struck, good very fine, extremely rare thus Estimate £   1,000-1,200PROVENANCE: Glendining, 9 December 1959, lot 341 J M Ashby, Spink Auction 145, 12 July 2000, lot 2038  The financial exigencies of Charles I´s reign led to a temporary reduction in the standard weight of the coins. Under the commission of 11 August 1626, the Tower mint introduced a lightweight issue on 14 August 1626, the issue being discontinued on 8 November 1626.
