George III, pair of Halfcrowns, 1817, struck in copper, large laureate head right, one with deeper Adam´s apple on neck, date below, georgius iii dei gratia, toothed border both sides, rev. struck en medaille, crowned escutcheon of the Arms of Hanover with six hearts in semee, upon crowned quartered shield, six strings to Irish harp, within Order of the Garter, and motto honi.soit.qui.mal.y.pense., legend surrounding britanniarum rex fid: def:, edge, milled (cf. Davies 51; ESC 617A R6; S.3788), one of these could be the so-called copper proof referred to in English Silver Coinage, the design seems to differ from the currency coinage with the neck, the other possibility is that these are forgeries which either never had their silver coating applied or the coating has worn away, an unusual pair, one with deeper neck has dig on neck, rim bruise, good very fine, other only good fine with a scratched obverse Estimate £ 100-150PROVENANCEThe better specimen H M Lingford, collection purchased en bloc by Baldwin, 1951
