James I, third coinage, Halfcrown, 14.70g., king crowned and in armour holding sword, on horseback walking right, groundline below, reads MAG BRI FRAN ET HIB, rev. square garnished shield, m.m. thistle over rose (both sides) (N.2122; S.2666) a neat round coin, good fine, an extremely rare overmark Estimate £ 600-800PROVENANCE: J M Ashby, Spink Auction 145, 12 July 2000, lot 2029 This coin also corresponds to the Crown series, bearing the thistle over ´seeded´ rose mintmark found on the extremely rare FRC obverse die VII*. It is struck from the same obverse die as lot 52 below, with the mintmark over punched and a groundline added, and the same reverse die as the Duprée coin, lot 50 note above, with the mintmark also punched over a rose.
