James I, second coinage, Halfcrown, 14.48g., king crowned and in armour holding sword, on horseback walking right, groundline below, rev. square garnished shield, pellet stops, m.m. escallop (N.2098; S.2653) evenly struck on an unusually full round flan, with an attractive old grey tone, almost very fine, of great rarity, the finer of the two known examples of this mintmark Estimate £ 2,500-3,000PROVENANCE: S G Lyddon, Sotheby, 8 November 1937, lot H M Lingford, Glendining, 20 June 1951, lot 1209 A E Bagnall, balance of collection purchased en bloc by Spink, 1964 E M Norweb, Spink Auction 59, 17 June 1987, lot 1424 For many years this coin was believed to be unique, the mintmark being published in Brooke supplement 264. In 1951 it attracted fierce bidding at the Lingford sale of coins of James I, and realized the enormous sum of £110. In 2003 a second example, from the same dies but rather worn, turned up in America and was subsequently sold in London Coins Auction, 6 July 2003, lot 628
