Elizabeth I, sixth issue, Halfcrown, 14.82g., bust 9B, crowned bust left holding orb and sceptre, rev. long cross fourchée over square garnished shield, m.m. 2 (Brown and Comber 9B; N.2013; S.2583A) lightly tooled in fields on both sides under a deep old tone, date (1813) faintly scratched above shield on reverse, otherwise good very fine, with an excellent portrait, extremely rare Estimate £ 2,500-3,000PROVENANCE: A D Clarke, Christie, 15 June 1891, lot 169 T Bliss, Sotheby, 22 March 1916, lot 313 Sir Kenyon Vaughan Morgan, Sotheby, 17 June 1935, lot 186 W L Raynes, Glendining, 15 February 1950, lot 478 The Elizabeth I Halfcrown, mintmark 2, is one of the great rarities of this series. There are possibly eight examples in private hands of which only four are in better than fine condition – (i) Lockett, lot 2002 (EF); (ii) Dr Burstal, lot 193 ex Dr Carter (EF); (iii) Raynes, lot 478 (gVF – this piece); and (iv) Ryan, lot 1027 (VF)
