Commonwealth, Halfcrown, 14.62g., 1659, shield of St. George within a wreath, rev. conjoined shields of St. George and Ireland, value above, m.m. anchor on reverse only (ESC 441; N.2723; S.3216) a most desirable piece, very lightly double struck on legend, otherwise a clear round coin, in good metal, very fine, of great rarity Estimate £ 5,000-6,000PROVENANCE: Sir Cuthbert Cartwright Grundy, gift to Father Arnold Mallinson as a boy, 1908 A Mallinson, Spink Auction 39, 6 December 1984, lot 104 H E Manville, Spink Auction 154, 12 July 2001, lot 19 This coin is, by a wide margin, the finest of the two known Halfcrowns dated 1659. The second example turned up in the Thames Find, Baldwin´s Auctions no.14, lot 488, but has a typically porous ´Thames Find´ surface and a date which is not well struck up.
