Charles I, Worcester mint, Halfcrown, 14.67g., king in armour on horseback left, holding sword upright, horse´s tail falls straight down, small W above grass below, rev. crowned oval draped shield, double annulet/lis stops, m.m. castle on obverse only (JGB 1143 (same dies); Allen B-9; N.2588; S.3097) struck on a small thick irregular flan, slight flecks on horse´s rump, otherwise good fine, the reverse better, very rare with oval shield Estimate £ 800-1,000PROVENANCE: Mrs Street, collection purchased privately by R Marsham post mortem R Marsham, Sotheby, 19 November 1888, lot 646 H Montagu, Sotheby, 13 November 1896, lot 554 Webb, collection purchased by Baldwin, prior to 1940 R C Lockett, Glendining, 4 November 1958, lot 3520 The ´Webb´ provenance attached to a number of fine Tudor and Stewart silver coins, several of which subsequently appeared in the Lockett collection, has created a certain amount of confusion. The well-known Webb auction is that of Henry Webb, sold by Sotheby in two parts in 1894 and 1895. The Lockett coins in question were purchased from Baldwin around 1940 from a completely separate collection, possibly of a relative of Henry Webb, which Baldwin had acquired privately. This reverse die, Allen 9, may have a mintmark but, if so, it is obscured by a die flaw on all the surviving examples.
