Charles I, Worcester mint (1644), Halfcrown, 14.42g., large equestrian portrait of king in armour walking left, holding sword upright, horse´s tail between legs and mane blown forward, small W below, CAROLVS D G MAG BRIT FRAN ET HIB REX, rev. declaration RELIG:PROT: LE:AN:LIB:PAR: in two lines, three large crude plumes above, date below, EXVRGAT DEVS DISSIPENTVR INIMICI, annulet/pellet stops, four pellets before EXVRGAT, no two lions passant on obverse only (JGB 1139 (same dies); Allen A-1; N.2598; S.3093), weak on king´s chest, and corresponding on reverse, lightly double struck on reverse, otherwise a well centred piece, very fine for this, extremely rare Estimate £ 2,000-2,500PROVENANCE: H Symonds (died 1933), Glendining, 26 September 1973, lot 90 D Dupree, Spink Numismatic Circular, February 1990, no.271 This very rare piece, the only ´Exurgat money´ in the whole Worcester/Salopia series, is struck from an altered 1643 Bristol reverse die, Morr. 1643 reverse die. It is the only instance of a die link between the two mints, see lot 197 above.
