Charles I, Exeter mint, Halfcrown, 14.33g., tall gangly figure of king looking towards viewer, on large ill-conformed ´Exeter´ horse walking left, sash flies out in two loose ends, horse with twisted tail, reads MA BR FR ET HI, rev. oval shield garnished with eight even scrolls, pellet stops, two pellets either side of reverse mintmark, m.m. ´Exeter´/´Truro´ rose (JGB –, (cf. 1051-60 (same obv. die); Besly N12a (unrecorded); N.2551; S.3075) striking cracks at 4 and 10 o´clock, on an irregular flan, the horse´s head weak, otherwise almost as struck, good very fine, an extremely rare ´mule´ issue Estimate £ 1,000-1,200PROVENANCE: Purchased on Ebay, October 2004 Only one example of an ´Exeter´ obverse die paired with an undated ´Truro´ reverse is recorded (N13, cf. Spink Auction 6, lot 104). It appears to represent the anachronistic use of a surviving reverse die, rather than an earlier date for die N, BNJ 1992, p.118. This coin is a second example and a new die pairing for the series.
