Charles I, Exeter mint, Halfcrown, 12.91g., small neat ´Briot´ horseman walking left, holding sword sloping forwards, lumpy ground below, rev. oval shield with angular garnishing of triple lines, double/single pellet stops, m.m. rose (JGB 1031 (same dies); Besly K17; N.2554; S.3069) lightly double struck on both sides, traces of light blue verdigris in legends, otherwise very fine, an extremely rare reverse type Estimate £ 1,200-1,500PROVENANCE: P Hunt, portion of collection purchased privately by Colin Adams, March 2000 Besly only records two examples of this die combination, those in the British Museum and Brooker collections. Lots 217-9 are struck from the same obverse die, and show the three different varieties of shield garniture in use concurrently at the Exeter mint
