Charles I, Exeter mint (1643-46), Halfcrown, 14.77g., king in armour holding sword upright, on large ill-conformed ´Exeter´ horse walking left, sash tied in a large bow, reads MA BR FRA ET HIB, rev. oval shield garnished with eight even scrolls, CHRISTO AVSPICE REGNO, semi-colon stops, m.m. rose (JGB 1028 (same obv. die); Besly J13 (this coin); N.2549; S.3064) a very pleasing coin, a weak patch on horse´s shoulder, otherwise on a full flan, attractively toned with extensive underlying golden/green lustre, good very fine, very rare thus Estimate £ 1,000-1,200PROVENANCE: S Simpson, collection purchased privately by R P V Brettell, 1955 R P V Brettell, Glendining, 28 October 1970, lot 40 P Hunt, portion of collection purchased privately by Colin Adams, March 2000 At the beginning of the Civil War the royalist county of Cornwall was isolated from the rest of England by the predominantly Parliamentarian Devon. Following a successful campaign, Prince Maurice captured Exeter for the king on 4 September 1643 and Sir Richard Vyvyan rapidly transferred his mint establishment to the larger city. Vyvyan himself was made a freeman of Exeter on 2 October 1643. This coin is the only example of this die pairing, J13, recorded by Besly.
