Charles I, Bristol mint, Halfcrown, 14.51g., 1643, Oxford horseman walking left, ground-line below, Oxford plume below, rev. declaration RELIG:PRO LE:AN:LI:PA in two lines, three large plumes above of more recognizably Bristol style, date below, double pellet/single wedge stops, four wedges arranged as a cross before EXVRGAT, no m.m. (JGB 970-2 (same obv. die); Morr. B-4, obverse BNJ XVIII, pl.I,16 (this coin), and reverse p.138, 3 (this coin); N.2484; S.3003) small flan flaw by king´s head, good fine and clear, very rare Estimate £ 600-800PROVENANCE: H W Morrieson, Sotheby, 20 November 1933 H M Lingford, collection purchased en bloc by Baldwin, 1951 Patrick Finn list 17, October 1999, no.333 This coin is struck from one of the later ´transitional´ reverse dies and, by comparison with lot 197 above, the plumes are of more typical ´Bristol´ style. Some confusion has arisen between Morr. dies 4 and 6 since the text and plates in Morrieson´s paper are transposed. If the text is paramount then this coin is struck from reverse die 4 and JGB 971 is from reverse die 6.
