Charles I, Oxford mint, Halfcrown, 13.66g., 1645, Briot horseman walking left, pebbly ground below, Oxford plume behind, reads MAG BRI FRA ET HI, rev. declaration RELIG:PRO:LEG ANG:LIBER:PAR in two lines, three Oxford plumes above, date and OX below, pellets beside date and OX, large/small pellet stops, five pellets before EXVRGAT, m.m. Oxford plume on obverse only (JGB 915/917 (same obv./rev. dies); Morr. E-7; N.2432; S.2959A) struck from an oversize reverse die, weak in parts, otherwise very fine, rare Estimate £ 600-700PROVENANCE: R D Beresford-Jones, Spink Auction 108, 7 March 1995, lot 599 This reverse die is of considerably larger diameter than the obverse die, and larger than any practicable flan size for a Halfcrown. As a result all the extant examples appear to be struck off-centre.
