Charles I, Oxford mint, Halfcrown, 1642, 14.29g., Shrewsbury horseman walking left, no ground-line below, Oxford plume behind, reads MAG BRIT FRAN ET HI, rev. declaration RELIG:PROT:LEG ANG:LIBER:PAR in two lines, three Oxford plumes above, date below, double pellet stops, m.m. Oxford plume on obverse only (JGB 882 (same obv. die); Morr. F-3; N.2412; S.2953) on an irregular flan, slightly weak on horse´s head, otherwise a pleasing example, toned with much underlying lustre, good very fine, rare thus Estimate £ 800-1,000PROVENANCE: H M Lingford, collection purchased en bloc by Baldwin, 1951 The diesinker´s compass marks for centralizing the reverse design can still be seen as faint raised lines in the declaration.
