Charles I, Oxford mint, Halfcrown, 14.54g., 1642, Oxford/Shrewsbury mule, Shrewsbury horseman walking left, horse´s off foreleg raised, ground-line below, Oxford plume behind, reads MAG BR FR ET HIBER, rev. declaration RELIG.PROT.LEG ANG.LIBER.PAR in two lines, three Shrewsbury plumes above, date below, reads INIMICI, double/ single pellet stops, group of four pellets before EXVRGAT, m.m. Oxford plume on obverse only (JGB 880 (this coin); Morr. C-1, and BNJ 1924, pl.iii, 23, 28 (this coin); N.2410; S.2951) struck slightly off-centre, faint scratches on reverse, otherwise an excellent coin, deeply toned, with a clear portrait, good very fine, very rare Estimate £ 1,200-1,500PROVENANCE: E W Rashleigh, Sotheby, 21 June 1909, lot 953 H W Morrieson, Sotheby, 20 November 1933, lot 516 H Platt Hall, Glendining, 26 July 1950, lot 170, collection purchased en bloc by Spink prior to sale J G Brooker, SCBI 33, no.880 The Oxford/Shrewsbury mule Halfcrown is significantly rarer than its Shrewsbury/Oxford counterpart.
