Charles I, group V, Halfcrown, 13.76g., Tower under Parliament, type 5, king in armour holding sword tilted slightly forward, on tall spirited horse with upright head, tail flowing back, rev. oval garnished shield, m.m. sceptre (cf. JGB 379; N.2215; S.2780) some scratches on obverse, weakly struck in apparently base silver, about fine Estimate £ 20-40PROVENANCE: H M Lingford, collection purchased en bloc by Baldwin, 1951 The Lingford ticket states ´poor silver´ but the weight and flan size are not incompatible with good metal, and the workmanship of the dies appears to be official. It is possible that the coin was once gilt and that this has worn away and discoloured.
