Charles I, group V, Halfcrown, 15.39g., Tower under Parliament, type 5, fifth horseman, king in armour holding sword upright, on tall spirited horse, tail flowing back, reads MAG BRI FRA ET HIB, rev. oval garnished shield, m.m. sun (cf. JGB 377; N.2215; S.2780), a pleasantly toned example, with traces of underlying gold lustre, very fine, scarce Estimate £ 250-300PROVENANCE: H M Lingford, collection purchased en bloc by Baldwin, 1951 B R Osborne, Glendining, 23 April 1991, lot 182 The horseman on this coin is a transitional variety between type 4 and type 5. The horse´s head turned slightly towards the viewer, the king´s cloak flowing from the shoulder in two distinct waves, and the sword angled slightly backward are all features of type 4 which were superceded on regular coins of type 5.
