Lot: 128

Charles I, group III, Halfcrowns (2), Tower under Parliament, type 3a3, king in armour on horse walking left, of cruder workmanship, cloak flies from king´s shoulder, no ground below, rev. oval garnished shield, (i) 14.77g., m.m. (R) (over eye on obverse (?)) (JGB -; N.2213; S.2778); (ii) 15.07g., m.m. eye (over (R ) on reverse) (JGB -; N.2213; S.2778) the first on a small flan, weak in centres, good fine, the second almost very fine, the overmark clear, both rare (2) Estimate £ 150-200Despite some double striking at 12 o´clock, the obverse mintmark on the first coin certainly has the appearance of being (R) over eye, though eye is the later mark. It is curious that, perhaps due to the large mint output of silver at this time, overmarks are relatively unusual on Halfcrowns of the Tower under Parliament series.
