Charles I, group III, Halfcrown, 15.13g., Tower, type 3a2 var., king in armour on spirited horse of finer style, with bushy tail trotting left, cloak flies out like arrowhead from king´s shoulders, no ground below, reads MAG BRIT FRAN ET HIB, rev. large oval garnished shield, m.m. star (over triangle on obverse) (cf. JGB 348 (mintmark triangle); N.2211; S.2777) struck on a slightly irregular flan, otherwise attractively toned, with traces of golden/blue lustre, good very fine, an excellent example of this very rare variety Estimate £ 400-500PROVENANCE: J M Ashby, Spink Auction 145, 12 July 2000, lot 2062 This horseman is more often associated with the Aberystwyth mint, type C, cf. JGB 745-6 and lot below. All three Aberystwyth Halfcrown varieties were produced with puncheons sent from the Tower mint -Aberystwyth type A (S.2878) from a puncheon of Tower type 3a2, without ground (S.2775); Aberystwyth type B (S.2879) from a puncheon of Tower type 3a2, with rough ground below (S.2776); and Aberystwyth type C (S.2880) from this puncheon of Tower type 3a2 var. (S.2777).
