xRichard II (1377-99), type IIC, Noble, 7.70g., Calais, king with porcine style face, standing facing in ship holding sword and shield, flag at stern, no marks, RICARD DEI GRA REX ANGL DNS HYB F AQVIT, rev. floriated cross with lis at ends, R in centre, double saltire stops, m.m. cross pattee on reverse only (Schneider 155 (same obv. die); N.1307; S.1661), an excellent example of this distinctive and curious type, almost extremely fine, very rare thus Estimate £ 2,000-2,500 PROVENANCE:F A Walters, Sotheby, 26 May 1913, lot 194L E Bruun, Sotheby, 18 May 1925, lot 359R C Lockett, Glendining, 17 October 1961, lot 4282Spink Numismatic Circular, April 1984, no.1884This obverse die was initially used at the London mint.
