xEdward VI, third period, Fine Sovereign, 15.37g., king enthroned holding orb and sceptre, portcullis at feet, EDWARD VI D G ANGLIE FRANCIE Z HIBERNIE REX, rev. square-topped shield in centre of Tudor rose, within double tressure, reads IHESV, double saltire stops, m.m. ostrich head (Schneider 701 (same dies); Brooke, ´English Coins´, pl.XXXVIII.2 (this coin); N.1926; S.2446), very slight double striking on the king´s crown, tiny dent on the reverse, a most attractive example of one of the great rarities of the English coinage, struck on a full round flan, with a clear portrait and mintmark, and lovely golden/red toning, good very fine, an exceptionally rare piece in this condition Estimate £ 30,000-40,000 PROVENANCE:British Museum (duplicate)R D Beresford-Jones, Spink Auction 29, 2 June 1983, lot 52Sharps Pixley collection, Spink Auction 72, 9 November 1989, lot 17Spink Auction 161, 14 November 2002, lot 117
