xGeorge III, Military style Guinea, 1813, sixth laureate head right, legend continuous over bust, georgivs iii dei gratia, toothed border both sides, rev. struck en medaille, crowned escutcheon of the Arms of Hanover upon quartered shield of arms within crowned Garter, honi soit qui mal y pense on Garter, four strings to Irish harp, date below, legend continuous below, britanniarum rex fidei defensor, edge curve grained (Schneider 613; MCE.404; S.3730), nearly very fine Estimate £ 600-800 The ´Military´ Guinea of 1813 was issued by order of the Mint to pay the Duke of Wellington´s army at the closing stages of the Peninsular War. The issue was necessitated by the refusal of Spanish locals to accept payments anything other than gold coin. The coins were stuck at the Mint´s new premises on Tower Hill. Full Guineas had not been issued since 1799 and it was to be the last issue of this denomination before the recoinage of 1817.
