x HONG KONG The James Davis Correspondence The following 102 lots emanate from one of the great correspondences known to philatelists. Covers from this correspondence graced the collections of Bishop, Yates, Rose-Hutchinson, Houston, Burghard, Ishikawa, Dyer, Lu and Rowell, to name but a few. However, none of these discerning philatelists came close to putting together anything like the remarkable assembly which follows, when considered from a numerical, or from a variety of frankings point of view. James Kennard Davis was born in 1847. He became the manager of the North China Insurance Company Ltd., and he was based in Hong Kong and Shanghai. He died on May 12, 1914. His legacy to philately was enormous. He wrote in the main to: a) Reverend James Davis, his father b) Mrs James Davis, his mother c) Shelly Kennard Davis, his brother Mail is also recorded to Agnes K Davis; another brother, Arthur Davis, was a merchant seaman. While most of his correspondence emanated from Hong Kong and Shanghai, one of the famous "N2" covers was from him, dated March 1 1876 at Nagasaki. He also received letters addressed to Hong Kong and Shanghai, and a choice range of incoming covers complete this section. 1869 (6 Apr.) envelope from Hong Kong to Mrs James Davis in London, marked "Via Marseilles", bearing 8c. bright orange (light corner crease) and 24c. pale green with wing-margin cancelled by neat "B62" obliterators, showing red manuscript "1/4" and, on reverse, despatch and arrival (15.5) datestamps. Very fine and fresh
