Charles I (1625-49), Tower mint, Halfcrowns (3), group II, (i) 14.96g., type 2a, king on horseback left, cross on housings, no groundline, rev. oval shield with CR above, m.m. rose over plume./rose, (N.2205; S.2769; JGB 303); (ii) 14.67g., type 2c, king on horseback left, cross on housings, no groundline, rev. oval garnished shield with CR at sides, m.m harp (N.2207; S.2771; JGB 312); (iii) 14.72g., type 2c, king on horseback left, cross on housings, no groundline, rev. oval garnished shield with CR at sides, m.m. portcullis, (N.2207; S.2771; JGB 316), all weakly struck on horseman, the first and second good fine, the third fine (3) Estimate £ 150-250 PROVENANCE: Messing Hoard, Essex 1975 The Messing Hoard, a typical Civil War silver hoard of 2222 coins dating from the fine issue of Edward VI to Charles I, was found locally to Ivan Buck. Many of the coins were returned to the finder and Ivan was able to acquire a number of picked examples for his collection.
