Edward IV, heavy coinage, Groat, 3.63g., type IV, London, m.m. rose, nothing on breast or neck, annulets by neck, rev. eye after TAS, (BW IV, (IV)/(i); S.1977; N.1533) small edge cracks at 12 and 6 o´ clock, lightly double struck on reverse, small flan striations on face, otherwise an excellent example of this extremely elusive type, very fine or better, very rare Estimate £ 500-600Most Edward IV Groats of this variety, with annulets at neck, are struck to the light weight standard (48 grains) type Va. Genuine examples of the heavy coinage, type IV, often appear to struck in baser metal, possibly as a mint experiment prior to the reduction of the weight standard which may account for their low survival rate.
