Henry VI, Groat, 3.78g., London, unmarked coinage, crosses IIIb/none, rev. extra pellets in the CIVI and LON quarters, no stops on reverse, (Whitton 65c; S.1931; N.1514) a splendid example of this elusive type coin, with a strong and distinctive portrait, good very fine, very rare Estimate £ 1,200-1,500PROVENANCE: Purchased R Renshaw, June 1997 This curious and short-lived coinage, with its very distinctive style, is the rarest substantive issue in the Henry VI series. Only four unmarked Groats have been sold at auction since 1960, and of the four specimens in the Reigate Hoard, three were retained by the British Museum.
