Henry VI, Groat, 3.91g., Calais, pinecone-mascle/leaf trefoil issue mule, crosses IIIb/IIIb, pinecones after HENRIC, DI and GRA, saltire after REX, no marks on reverse (Whitton 30h; S.1875/1899; N.1461/1485) struck on an irregular flan, otherwise a clear portrait, very fine, a very rare mule Estimate £ 300-400PROVENANCE: Reigate Hoard, Glendining, 8 December 1992, lot 321 This coin is struck from the same reverse die as a Calais trefoil issue Groat in the Reigate Hoard, lot 338. Silver output at the Calais mint had dwindled to virtually nothing at this period and this very interesting coin may be either a pinecone-mascle/leaf-trefoil or pinecone-mascle/trefoil mule.
