A Miniature Uniform of the Royal Engineers An extremely rare and interesting uniform, in the form of an officer´s pre-1902 mess-jacket, vest and trousers of the Royal Engineers, the jacket with blue velvet collar (bearing embroidered grenades) and cuffs, edged with gilt studs and trimmed with gold Russia braid as per 1900 Dress Regs Plate 30, the sleeves correctly braided for a Captain, scarlet waistcoat, also with gilt studs, and Russia braid edging, the blue trousers with stripes of gold Staff pattern lace See illustration Estimate £ 100-150This uniform was worn by the vendor, the son of a Royal Engineer officer, as a very small boy in the 1950s. He was exhibited, standing on a table, at a meeting of Sapper officers to discuss whether they should continue to wear the pre-war roll-collar mess jacket, or revert to the Victorian style. Having seen the latter uniform so fetchingly modelled, the officers present voted unanimously in favour of it. Unfortunately, however, their wishes were overruled by more senior members of the Corps, and the plainer style was adopted.
