Army. ´for services rendered in connection with the defence of Kut-al-Amarah.´ Major-General Harry Ashley Vane Cummins C.B., C.M.G.; born 1870; educated Royal Military College Sandhurst; Second Lieutenant Royal Welch Fusiliers 1889; transferred Royal Fusiliers later that year; Lieutenant 24th Punjab Regiment, 1891; Captain 1900; served in the China Expeditionary Force 1900-01 (entitled medal and clasp); appointed Second in Command 24th Punjab Regiment, 13.2.1912; Deputy Assistant Quartermaster-General and Assistant Quartermaster-General Embarkation Staff, Bombay, August 1914-July 1915; served in Mesopotamia August 1915-April 1916; advanced Lieutenant Colonel 21.9.1915 (M.I.D. London Gazette 13.7.1916 and 19.10.1916); Commanded 24th Punjab Regiment at Ctesiphon, November 1915 (wounded) and in Defence of Kut-el-Amara (6.12.1915-29.4.1916), and taken prisoner of war at the latter action; incarcerated April 1916-November 1918; Colonel Commandant 13.9.1919; Brigade-Commander Army of the Black Sea, 1920; Major-General 1921; General Officer commanding Bombay District, 1922-26.
