A Most Interesting and Rare Group of Five to Late Assistant Commissary-General J. Marsh, who Commanded a Squadron of Lancers in the British Auxiliary Legion during the Carlist War in Spain 1836-37, a Veteran of the South African 1851-53, and the Crimean Campaign South Africa 1834-53 (Dy. Asst. Comy. Genl. Joseph Marsh.); Crimea 1854-56, one clasp, Sebastopol, unnamed; Spain, Royal Military Order of St. Ferdinand, Cross of St. Ferdinand, 55mm., silver-gilt, gold and enamel, enamel damage to one arm; Spain, Royal Military Order of St. Ferdinand, Knight´s breast Badge, 28mm., gold and enamel, some enamel damage to suspension; Turkish Crimea, British die, pierced as issued, good very fine except where stated (5) Estimate £ 1,800-2,200The medals are sold with an inscribed silver plaque which reads: ´Assistant Commissary-General Joseph Marsh, of the Commissariat Department of the Army, whose death occurred on the 10th of November 1889 at 37 St. James´s Road, Kingston-on-Thames, at the age of 79, was the eldest son of the late Mr Richard Marsh of Farthingloe, Dover, Kent. The deceased served in the 2d Lancers on the staff of the British Auxiliary Legion in Spain, and was present with them in the action of Artaban, for which he received the decoration of the Cross of the 1st Class of St. Fernando. He was next given the command of a squadron of Lancers attached to General Espartero, which position he held from November 1836 to October 1837. Mr. Marsh served throughout the Caffre War of 1851 and 1853, receiving for his services a medal, and also in the memorable Eastern Campaign of 1854 and 1855, for his services at the latter he received a medal with clasp and Turkish medal´.
