Indian Mutiny 1857-58, one clasp, Defence of Lucknow (2nd. Lieut. J.H. Bryce, Arty.), extremely fine, in case, together with a highly emotive and most comprehensive archive of 74 letters from Bryce to his sister and parents 9.6.1852-3.5.1857, some together with original envelopes and stamp covers; eight letters from his sister and mother 17.5.-17.12.1857 received after his death "...The tidings of Lucknow relieved has at last reached us, and yet we are not relieved of our anxiety about our beloved son..." (17.11.1857), "...in the mercy of a kind providence I write with a heavy heart because, my son, your name so anxiously looked for is not in the list received of the survivors of the Garrison at Lucknow..." (17.12.1857), and two mounted and framed photographs of Bryce. A Framed French Passport, made out to Mr. James Bryce, is included with this Lot. Estimate £ 2,000-2,500Lieutenant John Henry Bryce, born 13.11.1832, Bengal Artillery, sailed to India 1852, served throughout India and the North West Frontier 1852-57. Severely wounded through the thigh while doing duty with his guns at the Cawnpore Battery, Lucknow 16.7.1857. Died in the Garrison of Lucknow from cholera 8.8.1857.
