Fernandes (1897-1988), Diplomat. Posted to Peking for six years in the 1920s, followed by a year in Paris. Posted to London 1934-36; subsequently established the first Portuguese Legation to South Africa; served as Representative in League of Nations; second in hierarchy in Madrid Embassy during the Spanish Civil War; Head of Mission, Japan 1939-45. After the War he returned to Lisbon to take up the post of Director General of Economic Affairs. Ambassador to Washington 1950-61, as well as Portuguese Representative to the United Nations.
