France, Aquitaine, Edward III (as lord of Aquitaine, 1360-62, 1369-77), Guyennois d´or of third issue, 3.85g., La Rochelle mint. ED´/D´/GRA REX A/Suggest/LI/E D´O AQVI:T/A/IE king in armour walking to right wearing a crowned helmet and holding a shield with the arms of England and France quartered upon it. Letter R between the king´s legs. rev.: +GLIA:IN:EXELCIS:DEO:ET:IN:TERRA:PAX:HOBVS cross fleury with lis in first and fourth quarters and leopards in the second and third, all within a tressure of fifteen arches (Elias 49; Beresford-Jones 63/70), very fine Estimate £ 3,000-3,500Edward, who had held the title of duke of Aquitaine since becoming king in 1327, adopted the title of lord of Aquitaine in 1360, following the signature of the Treaty of Bretigny in that year. That treaty accorded him sovereign rights to Aquitaine and he wished to show that he was no longer duke, owing fealty to the king of France, but sovereign lord.
