x Victoria, Visit of Queen Victoria to the City of London, AR gilt 55, by William Wyon, diademed bust of Queen Victoria left, VICTORIA REGINA rev. façade of the Guildhall IN HONOUR OF HER MAJESTY´S VISIT / TO THE CORPORATION OF LONDON / 9TH NOV: 1837 (BHM 1775; Welch 5), blue leather case of issue lined with white silk and blue velvet, gilt tooled border on lid, medal practically mint state, case nearly so, probably unique Estimate £ 1,000-1,200This piece struck in fine silver with contemporary gilding is believed to be unique and was presumably presented to a high dignitary to commemorate the occasion. It is likely that the case is one of the ´ten ornamental cases (Royal Family)´ recorded in an undated bill of William Wyon now in the archives of the Corporation of London. It is offered for sale with a certificate from the International Numismatic Anti-Forgery Bureau confirming the composition. The medal, usually to be found in silver and bronze, formed part of the series commissioned by the Corporation of London to commemorate important municipal events. The visit medal became more widely known when the effigy of the Queen was used as the basis of the design by Sir Henry Corbould for the penny black postage stamp.
