Crime and Punishment Punishment Transportation 1849 printed court document confirming the sentence of seven years transportation to Van Diemen´s Land for man from Glasgow convicted for theft; 1852 printed ´Clearance Permit´ issued at Launceston Police Office confirming that a convict who had completed his sentence was permitted to leave the colony on a ship to Melbourne; 1854 entire from England to Van Diemen´s Land, the reverse with pencil filing note ´W. Burgess´, the accompanying write-up suggesting that he was the same man, referred to in the V.D.L. Govt. Gazette of 13 September 1854, who was being sought by the authorities (he was not wanted by the courts – he had been named as the inheritor of ´considerable property´ in England and legal procedure demanded that all possible efforts must be made to advise the beneficiary of an estate).
