Crime and Punishment Crimes Bastardy 1591 printed Act of Parliament headed ´Elizabethae Reginae…. Justices of Peace shall order the Punishment of the Mother and reputed Father of a Bastard´ – this law remained in force until Queen Victoria´s reign as illustrated by this accompanying item: 1822 (28 Oct.) printed arrest warrant (the relevant details entered in ink manuscript) relating to a woman, Ann Shaw, who was alleging ´abandonment´ by the father of her unborn child, which stated that she had ´this present day declared herself to be with Child, and that the said Child or Children is likely to be born a Bastard´ and gives the order ´immediately to apprehend the said William Pace….. in pursuance of an Act passed …. concerning Bastards begotten and born out of lawful Matrimony´; folds and perimeter toning though still most attractive.
