Auction: 5011 - Stamps & Covers of the World
Lot: 1669
Cape of Good Hope 1854 (22 Feb.) entire from Capt. Gilbert Elliot at Cape Town to his father, Sir George Elliot, in London, bearing 4d. deep blue with clear to good margins nearly all round and neatly cancelled, upon arrival in London (21 April) re-addressed locally with 1d. Star (one blunt corner) cancelled "71", the cover then apparently forwarded under separate cover to Malta and backstamped with double-arc d.s. (9 May), marked "Not for Admiral Elliot" and charged "2/-" for return to London (24 May); the reverse with seal cut away nevertheless a remarkable "combination" franking. Photo
