Charles I, Oxford mint, Crown, 1644, replica of the celebrated Oxford Crown by Rawlins, king on horseback left, riding over view of the city of Oxford, rev. declaration in two lines, floral scrolls above and below, m.m. floreate cross on obverse only (cf. N. 2407; S. 2948), lightly double struck on parts of obverse legend, almost extremely fine Estimate £ 100-150This piece appears to have been struck in two halves with the obverse set into the reverse and joined around the upper rim. The date of manufacture is uncertain, possibly 18th or 19th Century, but the workmanship is of high order. A cast example of similar style was sold in Spink Auction 31, lot 208 and there was another in the Mantegazza Sale, Spink Auction 113, lot 23.
