xDistinguished Flying Medal, G.VI.R. (611725 F/Sgt. F.B. Knott. R.A.F.), extremely fine Estimate £ 1,000-1,200 D.F.M. London Gazette 14.11.1944 The Recommendation states: ´Flight Sergeant Knott has now completed 33 bombing sorties involving 185.20 operational hours flying. Throughout his tour, his enthusiasm to fly on operations has been unflagging and has contributed in no small measure to the high morale and efficiency of the gunners in his squadron. On his first operational flight (Nuremberg) his aircraft was attacked by enemy fighters no less than ten times over a period of an hour. Throughout these engagements his conduct was exemplary and due to his accurate shooting, one of the enemy aircraft was claimed as damaged. His skill and courage are further illustrated on the night of 6/7th July 1944, when his aircraft was attacked by an Me.109. Hits were scored in the starbord outer petrol tank which burst into flames. While the Lancaster offered an easy target, the enemy aircraft again attacked but met with steady and concentrated fire from the guns of Flight Sergeant Knott. Strikes were observed on the enemy aircraft which was forced to break off the combat. For his efficiency, determination, steadfast courage in the face of the enemy and for the high example he has at all times set, Flight Sergeant Knott is recommended for the award of the D.F.M.´ Flight Sergeant Frank Bernard Knott R.A.F., served as Air Gunner with 50 Squadron, Bomber Command.
