M.I.D. London Gazette 4.1.1917 Major Cyril Moreton Wheatley, D.S.O. (1870-1942), educated at Marlborough, accompanied the East Surrey Regiment to South Africa, 1899; joined the 2nd Battalion as Lieutenant 3.1.1900 and served with remounts until 1902; Captain 3rd Battalion (Militia) 1901; retired 1913; re-employed with the Essex Regiment 1914 as Officer Commanding A Company, 10th Battalion; proceeded to France in charge of transport and machine-guns 24.7.1915; Major September 1917 (D.S.O. London Gazette 1.1.1917; Mention in Despatches 4.1.1917).
