A Victorian Hussar Officer´s Busby An interesting late Victorian cap, possibly of the 8th Canadian Hussars by J. MARTIN SONS & Co 457 St PAUL STREET, MONTREAL, 71/4in. high in front, 81/2in. at back, with original pale leather internal headband and good crimson silk lining, bearing maker´s name in gold lettering (a later glazed leather headband now skilfully attached inside the original one), triple gold cords, cockade and corded chinchain (detached, the links now crudely refixed to the lining), white bag with gold Russia trim, with a 15in. white egret/vulture plume in file gilt socket (stem of plume broken and lower part insecurely replaced); together with a set of gold cord caplines, not of regulation hussar pattern See illustration Estimate £ 450-650 According to information kindly provided by Major R. McDuell, the 8th Canadian Hussars were formed in 1866 from seven independent troops as the New Brunswick Regiment of Yeomanry Cavalry. One of their early Commanding Officers was an ex-13th Hussar, who introduced his former regiment´s style of uniform. The regiment became the 8th Princess Louise´s New Brunswick Regiment of Cavalry in 1884.
