A Scarce Salonika R.F.C. Casualty Group of Three to Lieutenant Pilot G.A. Radcliffe, Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, attached Royal Flying Corps 1914-15 Star (2. Lieut. G.A. Radcliffe. A & S. Highrs); British War and Victory Medals (Lieut. G.A. Radcliffe.), nearly extremely fine, with selected copies of No.17 Squadron records including the entry for the 25.4.1917, and copies of correspondence between the War Office and the recipient´s father for the same year (3) Estimate £ 300-350 Lieutenant George Amyas Radcliffe, educated at Haileybury College; native of Edinburgh, Midlothian; joined 2nd Lieutenant 3rd Battalion Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, 6.1.1915; served in France prior to 2.10.1915; Lieutenant/Pilot attached No. 17 Squadron R.F.C., 1916; killed in action, Salonika 25.4.1917; commemorated on the Doiran Memorial, Greece. ´Lieutenant Radcliffe was taking part in the afternoon of 25th April, in a bombing raid and when over the enemy´s lines was engaged by hostile aircraft. His machine was observed by several officers to dive steeply from a height of about 8,000 feet, burst into flames and fall to the ground, apparently out of control´. (WO339/43331 refers)
