Charles I, Crown, 2.28g., Tower mint, group E, fifth bust, small 'Aberystwyth' style bust with single-arched crown, rev., crowned oval garnished shield, between crowned c r, m.m. anchor (right/upright) (Schneider 266 (same rev. die); N.2188; S.2708), an exceptional example of this type, well struck with a clear portrait, on a full flan, good very fine, extremely rare Estimate £ 600-800 provenance:

Schneider, BNJ 1959 p.391, suggests that rarity of group E crowns is such that the dies were probably given no more than a striking test and subsequently discarded. The examples in the Brooker (227-8) and Schneider (264-6) collections are all struck from a single obverse die. This coin is struck from a different obverse die, which shows the same distinctive broken anchor mintmark
