Fishpool Hoard, Glendining, 17 October 1968, lot 47
Glendining, 13 March 1975, lot 18
The magnificent Fishpool Hoard of 1,237 gold coins, found on 22 March 1966, near Newstead Abbey in Nottinghamshire, remains the largest and most important such hoard ever discovered in the British Isles. Recently voted one of the great treasures of the British Museum, most of the Hoard is on public display in the British Museum Coin Gallery. Only two of the six finders met the then conditions of Treasure Trove law, and of the 104 coins returned to them, 15 were subsequently purchased by museums. Just 89 pieces remain legitimately in private hands.
A full hoard report on the Fishpool Hoard remains outstanding, though an interim report was published in Numismatic Chronical, 1967, pp.133-145.
