Mementoes of Gustav Hamel, A Vanity Fair Supplement cartoon, Nº 2284 of the MEN OF THE DAY series, signed with initials WH and captioned "Flight", 15 in. x 10 in., in glazed frame 183/4 in. x 133/4 in.; together with an (unstamped) postcard bearing a photograph of Hamel standing beside an aircraft (2) Estimate £ 120-150 In 1914, Gustav Hamel, well-known as a spectacular stunt pilot, was one of the British contenders to be the first to achieve the crossing of the Atlantic by air. He ordered a large monoplane, with a 215-HP engine, with a watertight hull, for his attempt. However, before he could take delivery of this aircraft, he disappeared without trace while flying over the English Channel.
