Board of Trade Medal For Gallantry in Saving Life, silver, 63mm. x 56mm., (Commander John Tudor, R.N., attempt to rescue Crew of 'Vrouw Jantina' in distress off Wick, 9 Septr. 1857), claw and ring suspension, good very fine, with silver top riband suspension bar Estimate £ 400-450 Commander John Tudor entered the Royal Navy 6.3.1813 and was a Midshipman of H.M.S. San Josef in an action off Toulon later that year; he was made Lieutenant 26.3.1826; for his services in Command of the Honourable East India Company's War-Steamer Pluto at the capture of Woo-Sun, Shanghai, and Chin-Kiang-Fu in 1842, he was advanced to Commander in December of that year. As Commander of H.M.S. Firefly, he was actively engaged in the suppression of the slave trade on the West Coast of Africa 1848-50.
