†Edward I (1272-1307), Groat, 5.39g., London, variety a (Fox 5), small crowned bust facing, flower at each side by hair, within quatrefoil of three lines, flat crown with pellet ornaments, drapery of two wedges with rosette below, edwardvs di gra rex angl, rev. long cross with three pellets in each angle, dns hibne dvx aqvt, londonia civi, colon stops (SCBI 39, 1 (same obv. die); N.1007; S.1379A), light scratches on both sides, under a dark tone, otherwise a pleasing neat round coin, with a clear portrait, very fine, very rare Estimate £ 4,000-5,000
North places this as the first Edward I groat, SCBI 39, pp.4-8, on the cumulative evidence of several minor features, and on the existence of one die (SCBI 39, 5) where the crown has been refurbished to resemble that on variety b, but states that the exact chronology of the types is not yet certain.
