Auction: 4018 - The Coinex Auction
Lot: 438
Henry I, Penny, 1.33g., type XV, London, Estmund, crowned bust facing three-quarters left, holding sceptre, henricvs r:, rev. quadrilateral with lis at each angle over cross fleury, e[stmv]nd:on:lvnd: (BMC -; N.871; S.1276), reverse off-centre, struck from dies of unusually high quality workmanship, good fine Estimate £ 150-200
The full reading of the king's name, henricvs r, is very rare, there is only one example in BMC, BMC 267. The progressive abreviation of the obverse legend - henricvs r, henricvs, henricv, henric, appears to coincide with a decline in the quality of the dies for coins of Henry I type XV
