†A Great War M.C. Pair to Lieutenant A. Lomax, Royal Field Artillery attached Royal Air Force Military Cross, G.V.R., reverse engraved 'Lieutenant Alan Lomax R.A.F. 1918'; British War Medal (Lieut. A. Lomax R.A.F.), good very fine or better (2) Estimate £ 500-600 M.C. London Gazette 26.7.1918 T./Lt. Alan Lomax, R.F.A., attd. R.A.F. 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty on many occasions in bringing back accurate and detailed reports. He carried out five low reconnaissances over the enemy's lines in thick weather, in which most of the flying had to be done at under 500 feet. On four occasions his machine was badly shot about by machine-gun fire from the ground. He also carried out three offensive patrols, using bombs and machine-gun fire against enemy troops.' Lieutenant Alan Lomax M.C., whilst serving with 53 Squadron (RE8s), was shot down during the fighting for Kemmel Ridge (25.4.1918), 9.50am, at Reninghelst by Leutnant K. Schattauer, Jasta 16; both Lomax and his Pilot, Captain H.M. Gibbs were wounded in this action.
